Updated: Molasses Taffy recipe here!
Friday was a rough day...hectic with chores and freelance work, disappointing news regarding an overdue payment, and allergies flaring up so badly I'm having trouble sleeping thru the night. So of course we made candy Friday night (smile)!
I didn't have much sugar - a scant 1/2 cup of turbinado - but I did have molasses...so I made molasses taffy (recipe to follow when I get it "right" - but its basically sugar, molasses, and vinegar - with butter and a pinch of baking soda stirred in at the end). Spending and hour or so pulling taffy settled my nerves and my mood! And what a lovely sweet treat to enjoy with a nice cup of tea.
Candy-making is something that was once commonly done in the home - but many of us are far from those times. I experimented with some recipes as a child - and then made chocolates and other treats when my children were younger. Now that our first grandbaby is on the way, it seems a good time to get into practice...even if he won't be enjoying any for awhile (smile).
Homemade taffy doesn't set up as hard as commercial taffy - or at least mine never has! It is soft, chewy, and sweet - with a touch of a burnt sugar flavor from the molasses and a smooth richness from the butter. It is a wonderful, old-fashioned treat!
