We have a small deck off of our 3rd floor kitchen - and it is the perfect spot for my kitchen garden! With containers and planters I acquired via Freecycle and friends (and supplemented with only a few purchases) I am able to grow herbs, strawberries, flowers and small veggies in this wee space.
My current deck crop includes English peas, TONS of mint, spring onions, lettuces, and strawberries. Today being the first sunny day in a week, I potted up rosemary and peppermint starts; and sowed seeds for lemon balm, dill, echinacea, parsley, and asclepia. (I've never had luck with the ascelpia from seed, but I keep trying!)
Once the peas and spring onions are done, patio tomatoes and perhaps a pepper or two will replace them. I tend to plant basil and leaf lettuces in with the tomatoes - the basil improves the taste of the tomatoes, and the lettuces shade the roots! And there are a few pots planted with marigolds and nasturtiums that are *just* starting to sprout. These flowers are edible, attract pollinators, and supply a little joy for the eye :)
Do you do any container gardening?
