Big dream, small beginnings

We have been slowly expanding our garden over the past few years - from a few small pots of lettuce, to an extensive container garden, to proper beds in the ground. This is a photo of our "first bed" - roma tomatoes, marigolds for beauty and protection against pests, basil, carrots, and onions.

Each bed is made by hand, and digging out turf from compacted clay soil with a shovel is thirsty work! And once that was done, digging of compacted soil, raking out stones and raking in compost and manure was the next task. Setting in the plants was the fun part! And the brick edging is to ensure that my landlord's "lawn care experts" do not mow down my garden. Again.

Bed 2 will contain more tomatoes, plus peppers, with flowers and herbs as companions. And Bed 3 will be a corn and beans patch. Ideally, Bed 4 will be completed soon enough to sow squash and pumpkin...but we shall see!

And we still have our containers going, with patio and cherry tomatoes, lettuces, beets, herbs, flowers, and peas.

How is your garden growing?
