Garden Update, Jun 25 '12

We have flowers on the zucchini and tomato plants! Yes, the zuccs are only showing those first male flowers, but since they are in my "experiment" bed - I am thrilled to see anything at all! The "experiment bed" started as a patch of compacted, clay lawn that I stripped the turf from and raked in manure and compost...but didn't really prep other than that. So it is still rather clayey, and not even mulched!

I sowed radishes, leaf lettuces and chard as a sort of "green mulch" in that bed, and they are all popping up nicely. The bush beans aren't doing very much yet - I am hoping the seedlings start this week...or else I have to consider that using 3 year old seeds was a bad idea...

In the other beds, tomato flowers are starting their bloom and the bees and butterflies are flitting about all day (go little pollinators!) Flat onions and carrots are sprouting...and due for a thinning soon. I'll be transplanting strawberries this coming weekend (weather willing), and possibly also creating a peppermint patch (my peppermint is outgrowing its pot AGAIN!).

In the containers, lettuces and herbs all growing and green and tasty! Our marigolds never germinated, so I bought a half-flat, as I like them for companion planting. And the burst of orange is always a cheerful note of color!

How is your garden growing?
